Lok Sabha (Lower House) proceedings were disrupted today as the Opposition continued protests following the introduction of the Merchant Shipping Bill, 2024. The Bill, aimed at consolidating laws on merchant shipping and ensuring compliance with international maritime obligations, was introduced by Ports, Shipping and Waterways Minister, Sarbananda Sonowal. Congress MP Manish Tewari and Trinamool Congress MP Sougata Ray opposed the Bill, claiming it lacked legislative competence and could hinder the development of mercantile shipping. Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day shortly after reconvening.
The Lok Sabha commenced its proceedings, but was adjourned till noon following continuous protests from the opposition. Speaker Om Birla urged members to maintain parliamentary decorum and allow the Question Hour to proceed smoothly. However, the opposition’s efforts to disrupt the session led to the adjournment of the House.
Rajya Sabha
The Rajya Sabha (Upper House) was adjourned today after Opposition and ruling party members clashed over the George Soros and Adani issues. MPs from both sides raised slogans, leading Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar to suspend proceedings until 11 a.m. tomorrow.
The Rajya Sabha faced disruptions as the session was adjourned till 12 p.m. shortly after the House convened. Members began protesting as Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar started listing the adjournment notices. In response to the commotion, the Chairman adjourned the proceedings.
Meanwhile, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Sanjay Singh filed a suspension of business notice, drawing attention to the rise in crimes and the deteriorating law and order situation in Delhi.
