A coalition of 10 central trade unions affiliated to various Opposition parties has threatened a nationwide strike against the Union government's move to notify the four labour codes.

During a pre-budget meeting with Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, the unions urged her to halt the codes' implementation, while the pro-government, RSS-affiliated Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh called for notifying the rules for just two of the four codes —- on Wages and on Social Security.

In a statement, the unions criticised the government's "anti-people, anti-worker" policies and demanded the reinstatement of the Old Pension Scheme and the formation of the Eighth Pay Commission.

They also expressed support for farmers’ protests and warned of intensified joint actions with the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM). A district-level protest is planned for 5 February against the Budget.
