The Congress-led opposition submitted a no-confidence motion against Rajya Sabha (Upper House) Chairperson Jagdeep Dhankhar today. Congress MP Jairam Ramesh, speaking for the Opposition alliance - Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) - said the motion was submitted due to Dhankhar's "extremely partisan" conduct of the House.
The motion, according to Ramesh, is backed by India bloc MPs from Congress, All India Trinamool Congress, Aam Aadmi Party, Samajwadi Party, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, and Rashtriya Janata Dal.
According to the rules, the motion to remove Dhankar must be approved by a simple majority - that is, 50 per cent plus one - of voting Rajya Sabha MPs. It must then pass a similar test in the Lok Sabha (Lower House). As the Opposition lacks a clear majority, Dhankar is unlikely to be removed.
