After Justice Shekhar Kumar Yadav of the Allahabad High Court made contentious statements at an event hosted by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad last week, the INDIA bloc (united opposition) parties in the Rajya Sabha are preparing to issue a notice to move the impeachment motion.
Sources cited by the India Express said 36 Opposition MPs across different parties have already signed the petition, initiated by Independent Rajya Sabha MP and senior lawyer Kapil Sibal. The opposition will push for more signatures and file the motion on December 12.
Speaking at a Vishwa Hindu Parishad event on December 8, Justice Shekhar Kumar Yadav of the Allahabad High Court said, “I feel no hesitation in saying that this is India, and it will run as per the wishes of its majority.” Justice Yadav also made strong remarks on Muslim marriage practices and backed the Uniform Civil Code.
On December 9, the All India Lawyers Union sent a petition to the President and Chief Justice of India, seeking action against Justice Yadav.
The Supreme Court has also requested information from the High Court regarding the speech made by Justice Yadav.
