Mahindra & Mahindra has overtaken Tata Motors as India’s third-largest carmaker three times in the second half of 2024, driven by successful vehicle launches. In August, September, and November, Mahindra's market share was 12.64%, 12.64%, and 13.14%, surpassing Tata’s 12.26%, 11.53%, and 13.10% in those months, according to government data, as reported by Mint. Tata Motors, which had previously competed for second place with Hyundai Motor India, has struggled with declining electric vehicle (EV) sales and an aging product line-up. Meanwhile, Mahindra has gained with models like the Thar and XUV700, capitalising on the SUV market, which makes up 65% of India’s passenger vehicle sector.
