The Lok Sabha has extended the Joint Committee on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill's deadline to the end of the Budget session next year. Committee Chairman Jagdambika Pal, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, moved the resolution, which was adopted by voice vote. The committee, formed on 8 August, was initially tasked with reporting by 29 November.
Opposition members, critical of proposed amendments they allege infringe on Muslim religious rights, walked out of a meeting on Wednesday, citing dissatisfaction with the panel’s proceedings. Pal stated the draft report is ready but agreed to extend the timeline after opposition protests. The BJP contends the amendments aim to ensure transparency and accountability in waqf board operations.
