Donald Trump’s return as president has reignited concerns over the future of the H-1B visa programme, which is recquired for highly skilled foreign workers in the US. However, Indian IT services providers are less reliant on these visas, with a drop in their numbers over the past decade.
Companies like Infosys, Cognizant, and Tata Consultancy Services have increased local hiring in the US, reducing their dependence on the H-1B programme. Despite this shift, visa restrictions could still impact profit margins, particularly with the potential for higher wage costs if salary thresholds for H-1B workers are raised.
In 2024, India's top IT firms secured around 25,261 H-1B visas, about half the number a decade ago, Mint reports.
