India needs to increase its fertiliser production capacity as situations in Ukraine and the Middle East are likely to remain unstable, said Senior Economist of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, Nicholas Sitko.
To reduce its reliance on imported fertilisers, India should consider transforming its agricultural systems and concentrating on increasing soil organic carbon through the adoption of natural farming methods, he added.
In 2023–24, the average fertiliser use across India was close to 140 kg per hectare, however in Punjab, it was 247.61 kg per hectare.
