India’s share of US apparel imports rose from 4% in 2013 to 5.8% in 2023, supported by political stability and vertical integration in its textile industry, according to a report by the US International Trade Commission (USITC). India exported $4.6 billion in apparel to the US in 2023, becoming the fourth-largest supplier. The report highlights India’s skilled labour force, cotton-based garment production, and government policies like the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme as factors driving growth in high-value apparel exports. Political instability in competing markets, such as Bangladesh, is also steering US buyers toward India.
