On Wednesday, India and China made strides towards normalising relations following talks between National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing.

The two sides agreed on a set of "six consensus," points including the resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, cross-border river cooperation, and Nathula border trade. The discussions also covered maintaining peace in border areas and advancing border management. Both sides affirmed the implementation of the October 2024 disengagement agreement, enabling patrolling and grazing in relevant areas. They agreed to hold the next round of Special Representatives (SR) talks in India in 2025.

6-Point Consensus

  1. The solution reached on border issues was positively evaluated with an agreement to continue implementation without affecting bilateral relations.
  2. A commitment was reaffirmed to seek a fair and mutually acceptable solution to the boundary issue based on the 2005 political guidelines.
  3. An agreement to refine border management rules, strengthen confidence-building measures, and achieve sustainable peace.
  4. Cross-border exchanges to be strengthened with efforts to promote Indian pilgrimages to Tibet and China, and strengthen river cooperation and Nathula border trade.
  5. The special representatives' meeting mechanism will be enhanced with improved diplomatic and military coordination through the China-India Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on Border Affairs (WMCC).
  6. A new round of special representatives’ meetings will be held in India next year, with the specific timing to be determined through diplomatic channels.
