A political controversy has been triggered by historian Rizwan Kadri's letter to Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, urging him to get former Congress President Sonia Gandhi to return the Jawaharlal Nehru papers taken away in 2008. These papers, containing correspondence with Albert Einstein and Edwina Mountbatten, were moved from the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library (NMML), now the Prime Ministers Museum & Library (PMML), by a representative of then United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson Sonia Gandhi. Kadri has requested Gandhi’s assistance in ensuring these documents are preserved and made accessible, as reported by The Indian Express.
Meanwhile, BJP Member of Parliament Sambit Patra has alleged that Sonia Gandhi took 51 cartons of letters written by Nehru and is calling for the documents' return. Patra also demanded the release of Nehru's letters to Edwina Mountbatten, accusing Congress of holding them from the PMML, and questioning the reasons behind the removal.
