Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government is advancing efforts to reduce dependence on China in the electric vehicle (EV) supply chain by supporting local innovations, The Economic Times reports.

Abhay Karandikar, head of the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF), said the foundation is driving research in battery technology, power electronics, and charging infrastructure to build an indigenous EV ecosystem.

The ANRF, launched under a 2023 law, has a ₹14,000 crore ($1.7 billion) five-year budget and plans to engage industry-academia partnerships in research projects. Industry estimates suggest India’s EV battery market will grow to $27.7 billion by 2028, requiring over 1.3 million charging stations by 2030.
