Union Minister of Road Transport & Highways, Nitin Gadkari, unveiled the Humsafar Policy, a major initiative aimed at improving the overall infrastructure along India's national highways. By implementing the policy, the ministry aims to modernise the national highway network and bring it up to international standards.

New Delhi plans to set up over 950 new wayside amenities sites across some 42,000 kilometres of highways (with more than four lanes) to provide food, fuel, toilets, convenience stores, ATMs, trauma centres and auto repairs.

One of the key aims of the policy is to improve the safety of highway users. Clean toilets, parking spaces, and rest areas will ensure drivers can take the necessary breaks, reducing fatigue and the risk of accidents. The policy will also boost local economies by creating business opportunities along the highways.

EV charging stations will also be included to make highways more sustainable and be future-ready for the transition to electric vehicles.
