The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the PAN 2.0 project with a budget of ₹1,435 crore ($173 million). This initiative aims to modernise the Income Tax Department’s operations, aligning with the government’s Digital India programme. PAN 2.0 will transform the Permanent Account Number (PAN) into a universal identifier across government digital systems, streamline services, and improve data security.

Features include QR code integration, a unified portal for applications, and a paperless upgrade process. Businesses will benefit from unified systems for PAN, Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number (TAN), and Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN). The rollout timeline is yet to be announced.
